Hello there Super Friends!
Welcome to another installation of the Hall of Justice Blog.....
Speaking of, maybe we should have a contest to name the blog? What do you think?
Anyhow, as you may or may not know, I am a part of a podcast ran by my good friend Juan, and my new friend Gabe. The podcast is called "Thinking Outside the Longbox" and is a show about stuff that the three of us like. Namely, comics, movies, tv, and pop culture. I have never been a part of a podcast before and so when I was asked to do a segment on the show, I said yes!
Now, because both Juan and Gabe live in Northern Colorado, and I live closer to Denver (about an hour and a half drive up to the guys) it didn't make sense for me to record with them, so I do my segment remotely from the house, and Juan edits everything together.
I've had a lot of fun recording and being a part of the show, but when I listened to the show after it was released to the public, it made me kind of sad, because it sounded like the guys were having a blast, and I found myself throwing my two cents into the show as I was listening. Thats the sign of a good show right...?
Fast forward to this last week. I get a note from Juan that he and Gabe will be recording on Sunday, Nov. 9th and asked if I could join. Now I am in a tricky situation. I have a work from home job, while also taking care of our 11 month old child, and my wife travels weekly for work. All of these things make it difficult for me to drop what I am doing to run out and do something. However, the guys were recording early in the morning, much before my wife would have to leave to the airport.
So I decided to do it! I grabbed some gear, (Juan had bought some bags and boards, and Gabe had placed an order with me through the website, along with a few freebies) loaded up the truck and began the long journey to Greeley. I was pumped! I was going to record with the guys, and then hopefully have a chance to visit The Nerd Store in Greeley, and do some back-issue hunting! (The Nerd Store is the shop that Gabe works at, and also one of our sponsors for the Halloween Pumpkin Carving Contest)
The drive up was inconsequential, but certainly echoed of the days that I used to live, work, and go to college in Greeley. As i pulled into town, I needed to use a bathroom, and figured I could pick up a bottle of water and some gum at a convenience store while I was at it. I pulled into a respectable looking gas station in Evans, walked in the door, and immediately noticed that no one was in the shop. Not a clerk behind the counter, not any customers shopping. It was truly bizarre. I made my way back to the restroom, turned the handle and sure enough it was locked. I went back into the shop, looked around a bit, and still no one was around. Maybe I didn't turn the handle hard or far enough....I went back to the restroom door, and tried again, but this time was met with a very stern
"Somebody's in here..."
It must have been the clerk? As I was about to pee myself, I didn't stick around to find out. I ran out of the shop, jumped into the truck and found another shop with ample, un-occupied, restroom space, and breathed a huge sigh of relief. I paid for a pack of gum and bottle of water and made my way to Gabe's house.
I was met at the door by Gabe's family. All of whom are amazingly awesome! I was escorted to the basement, where I find Juan hovering over a table that has 3 microphones on it, a crazy mixing board and he is furiously adjusting settings and turning knobs. I meet Gabe for the first time and he shows me a bit of his collection before we sit down to start recording episode 5.
The session was an absolute blast, and I feel a little comic dominant, which is ok by me! Before you know it we were chatting about all things nerd, and 2 hours completely blew by. We took a break in the middle to refuel on behalf of Mel and some muffins and eggs that she made for us, and after we were finished recording I got to peruse a bit more of Gabe's collection. He has an amazing collection of books, especially in the horror genre, and has a massive Conan run as well.
After wrapping things up and saying our goodbyes, I found out that The Nerd Store is closed on Sunday's! DOH! I was kinda bummed that I wouldn't get to thumb through any back issue boxes, but left with a big smile because of all the fun that I had had. I can't wait to get up there to record live with the guys again!
